Yes at first because from then on it only gets bad for him and for the country. What I really liked about this book is that it's very topical, the story happened in the late 80s but it's about terrorism and today all we hear about is terrorism. So if you want to know more about this species lol sorry I can't say humans And you're looking for accurate information this book is what you need. That's one thing about this book: good source of information, topical, accurate, you get an insight of what terrorism is. But there is something else, and here it's much more personal, because I'm Algerian and French and this book made me open a very hard topic with my mother.

My mother lived in Algeria during these years of terrorism and she has witnessed some awful things very well described in the book.
